Screening of the cursed film Begotten (1989), followed by a behind-the-screen performance by R. Buttrum.
The Texas Theatre is screening Begotten on Friday, October 23, with a performance by R. Buttrum to follow. It's the first time the film has ever played at the venue, and it's part of the theater's Behind the Screen series.
Begotten (1989) was directed by E. Elias Merhige, who wrote it with Tom Gunning. It's a film that's earned a reputation as truly cursed, and it doesn't have characters in any ordinary sense. The final credits name only three figures: God Killing Himself, Mother Earth, and Son of Earth. That's the whole cast. If you've never seen it, it's a stark, high-contrast piece of cinema that feels more like a moving painting than a movie, and it's best experienced on a big screen.
Once the film wraps, the night continues with a Behind the Screen performance by R. Buttrum. The screening and the performance are two separate parts of the same evening, so you'll get the full movie and then the live set afterward. The Texas Theatre is an Oak Cliff landmark that's been voted Best Movie Theater in Dallas by the Dallas Observer and D Magazine, and this is its first time bringing Begotten to the screen.
