Bears in Trees play Deep Ellum Art Company on Friday, March 5, 2027, with support from Games We Play. The show starts at 8 PM at 3200 Commerce St in Dallas.
If you're not familiar with them, Bears in Trees started in a South London basement at the beginning of 2015. They were four sixth-form kids from Croydon who never quite fit into the local music scene, and they built their sound around mid-2000s emo-pop lyrics and happy-go-lucky indie rock. Three of them had played together in The November Criminals before that, so they had a working relationship going from the start. They describe their sound as spanning several genres—pop, folk, indie rock, and emo—but they prefer to call themselves a "dirtbag boyband."
That description tells you a fair bit about where they sit. The emo-pop influence points toward the melodic, earnest songwriting of the mid-2000s, while the indie rock side keeps things loose and guitar-driven. The folk element adds a softer, more acoustic edge to the mix, and the "dirtbag boyband" label suggests they don't take themselves too seriously, even when the songs lean into the more sentimental side of the emo tradition. It's a wide enough net that you can hear different moods in the same set.
