If you want to run in costume this October, the Dallas area has a couple of themed races worth knowing about. The biggest one left is the Spooky Sprint, put on by Bodies Race Company, which lands on Halloween itself, Saturday, October 31, at Audubon Park in Garland. It's part of the local Bodies Race Series, known for being family-friendly, and it packs in a lot of options: a Kids Dash, a 1-mile, a 5K, a 10K, and a half marathon, plus a virtual version if you can't make it in person. The Kids Dash starts at 7:55 AM, with the national anthem and the main races following at 8:00. Packet pickup runs from 6:30 to 7:45 AM on race day, so you'll want to arrive early. A 5K or 10K is $32, the half marathon is $61, and the 1-mile is $22, with a $17 youth rate for ages 12 and under. You get a designer shirt, a personalized finisher medal, chip timing with live results, free photos, and free snacks at the finish line. Age-group awards go to the 5K, 10K, and half marathon, with categories from 10 and under all the way up to 80-plus. The race runs rain or shine, so no refunds, and if the venue cancels or the roads get icy, it flips to virtual. If you'd rather do the virtual version, you can run it anywhere on any day and still get a digital bib, an event shirt, and a finisher medal shipped to you the Wednesday after the race. The usual October weather here is a high in the low 70s and a low around 50, with a 25% chance of rain, so layers are a good call.

Earlier in the month, Farmers Branch held its first Fall Fest & Spooky Dash at Farmers Branch Historical Park, which combined Halloween in the Park and Haunts & Houses with a timed 5K and an untimed 1-mile fun run, free admission and a full morning of trick-or-treating and haunted attractions. It's the kind of event that sets the bar for what to look for in future Halloween runs around here.
As for the costume part, a few tips go a long way. Pop culture is easy: superheroes like Wonder Woman or Spider-Man, TV icons from Stranger Things or Squid Game, or video game classics like Mario and Luigi. Group costumes work well too, think Pac-Man and the ghosts, the Scooby-Doo gang, or a team of Avengers. If you'd rather be clever, punny costumes like a 'Cereal Killer' or 'Running Late' always land. And for something local, you can't go wrong with cowboy gear, Dallas Cowboys or Mavericks colors, or a shirt that says 'Traffic Dodger of Dallas.' Whatever you pick, keep it practical: breathable fabrics, light capes, foam accessories, and reflective elements. Make sure your bib and timing chip stay visible, wear actual running shoes, and bring a light layer for those cool October mornings. If you're looking for a good spot to photograph the costume afterward, Klyde Warren Park, White Rock Lake, and the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge are the go-to backdrops around town.
