Jazz performance recreating the legendary album A Love Supreme by John Coltrane, performed by Tim Scott and his quartet.
Tim Scott brings A Love Supreme to Middle C Jazz on Wednesday, October 28. It's part of a series that takes legendary jazz albums and performs them live, front-to-back, to capture the energy and improvisational spirit of the original recording. The album at the center of this one is John Coltrane's A Love Supreme, which he recorded in a single evening on December 9, 1964. It's widely regarded as a masterpiece of spiritual jazz and modal avant-garde.
Coltrane wrote it as a four-part suite — Acknowledgement, Resolution, Pursuance, and Psalm — and composed it as a prayer and an expression of gratitude after he overcame addiction and went through a spiritual awakening. His quartet on the record featured McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums, and the album helped shift jazz from nightclub entertainment into something more like sacred art.
Scott leads the night with Lovell Bradford on piano, Skip Bradford on bass, and Marcus Jones on sax. Scott himself is a Buffalo-born, Charlotte-based drummer, producer, and entrepreneur who has toured with The Foreign Exchange and shared stages with Branford Marsalis, Robert Glasper, and Fantasia. He also co-founded Communities in Concert.
