A family-friendly concert tour of America's Jazz Age with the blues, led by Byron Stripling, performed by the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra.
The Blues on Parade comes to Knight Theater on Saturday, January 23, 2027, as part of the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra's Family Series. It's a morning matinee, running from 11 AM to 12 PM, so it's one of those shows you can take the kids to before lunch.
The program takes you back to the roots of the blues and through the Jazz Age of New Orleans during the Mardi Gras season. You'll hear bright trumpet lines, spirited rhythms, and classic melodies, with songs made famous by Louis Armstrong, Ma Rainey, Bessie Smith, and Muddy Waters. It's a tour of the music that helped shape American sound, and since it's part of the Family Series, it's built for all ages.
Byron Stripling leads the performance, pulling triple duty as conductor, vocalist, and trumpet player. He's joined by Sydney McSweeney on vocals and Bobby Floyd on keyboard, with the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra providing the full orchestral backdrop. The Family Series itself is a cycle of one-hour interactive programs that welcome special guests and children's stories, and they always open with pre-concert activities in the lobby, so there's something to do before the music even starts.
