Steve Vai performs with Adrian Belew, Tony Levin and Terry Bozzio in the BEAT ensemble, reinterpreting King Crimson albums on the U.S. 2026 tour.
Steve Vai plays Ovens Auditorium on Saturday, November 21, as part of a 40-date U.S. tour. He's not on his own for this one: he's playing in a group called BEAT, alongside King Crimson alumni Adrian Belew and Tony Levin, with drummer Terry Bozzio on the other side of the kit.
The set is built around three King Crimson albums from the 1980sβDiscipline, Beat, and Three Of A Perfect Pairβwhich the four of them are reinterpreting. They're also adding material from the band's 1990s era to the repertoire, so it's a mix of those early records and the stuff that came later. If you're coming for the King Crimson connection, that's the core of what they're doing here.
For those who know Vai mostly as a solo act, it helps to see where he fits in. He's a Grammy-winning guitarist, composer, and producer who grew up on Hendrix, Zappa, Alice Cooper, and Jimmy Page, and used to jam with Joe Satriani before heading to Berklee College of Music. His professional career took off when Frank Zappa hired him to transcribe his experimental symphonic rock, calling him his "little Italian virtuoso" and listing him as "stunt guitarist." After leaving Zappa in 1982, he recorded Flex-Able, replaced Yngwie Malmsteen in Alcatrazz, and joined David Lee Roth in 1985, recording the multi-platinum albums Eat 'em And Smile and Skyscraper. In 1989, he replaced Adrian Vandenberg in Whitesnake for Slip of the Tongue. He's also known to have perfect pitch.
