Middle C Jazz marks its seventh anniversary with a jazz, soul and blues night led by house favourites Noel Freidline and Maria Howell, plus Morgan James and Doug Wamble.
Middle C Jazz is celebrating its seventh anniversary on Friday, November 6, with a show led by house favorites Noel Freidline and Maria Howell. They've expanded their usual pairing into a quartet for the night, bringing in Broadway soul singer Morgan James and blues-jazz guitarist Doug Wamble. The set pulls from a few different directions: smooth jazz standards, soulful pop redesigns, and grit-infused blues.
Freidline is a mainstay of the East Coast jazz scene and one of the architects of Middle C's signature sound. Howell first stepped into the national spotlight in The Color Purple and has since appeared in films like Hidden Figures. Morgan James is a Juilliard-trained Broadway star and a Postmodern Jukebox performer. Doug Wamble, born in Memphis, has collaborated with Wynton Marsalis and composed for Ken Burns documentaries; he blends gospel, Delta blues, and modern jazz.
It's a big lineup for one stage, and the mix of jazz, soul, and blues should give the night plenty of range. Craft cocktails and small plates are available to open the evening, so you can settle in before the music starts.
