Progressive bluegrass quartet Magoo performs live at the Visulite Theatre in Charlotte.
Magoo play the Visulite Theatre on Friday, October 30, their first Charlotte date since they released their debut album, What a Life, back in February. They're a progressive bluegrass quartet from Denver, Colorado, and they've built their following on intricate arrangements, tight three-part harmonies, and extended improvisations — a combination that makes their live shows notably improvisational and their sound lean toward genre-blending.
What a Life had some heavy lifting behind it: bluegrass legend Sam Bush contributed fiddle and harmony, and two-time GRAMMY winner David Glasser handled the mastering. The band's lineup is a collection of competition-tested players: dobroist Dylan Flynn won the 2024 RockyGrass Dobro Competition; guitarist Erik Hill was a runner-up in the RockyGrass Flatpicking Contest; mandolinist Courtlyn Bills and bassist Denton Turner round out the quartet. Together they've taken first place at the UllrGrass Band Competition and Clash of the Strings, second at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival Band Competition, and played a sold-out headlining show at Denver's Bluebird Theater.
