A hands-on, visitor-driven creative space where people of all ages can play, explore and learn about the museum collection through art-making and interactive challenges.
The Lewis Family Gallery is open at The Mint Museum Uptown in Charlotte, and it's one of those museum spaces that actually asks you to touch things. It's a hands-on, visitor-driven area where people of all ages can play, explore, and learn about the museum's collection, so it works just as well for a family outing as it does for anyone who wants to spend an afternoon messing around with art.
Inside, the gallery is set up as a creative environment for making art, building and puzzle challenges, and posing for pictures. One of the standout features is a Romare Bearden collage playhouse you can actually step into, which lets you experience Bearden's collage style from the inside rather than just looking at it on a wall. It's a space built for doing rather than just observing, and it's designed to be accessible to everyone from young kids to adults.
Because it's a hands-on space, it's a good spot to bring along anyone who usually gets restless in a traditional gallery. You can spend as much or as little time as you want, and since it's open on a rolling schedule, you don't have to rush through it in one go. It's included with general admission, so if you're already planning a day at the museum, this is a natural addition to the visit.
