Solo-acoustic, nonpartisan voter registration and civic engagement tour by King Youngblood; all campus shows are free.
King Youngblood plays UNC Charlotte on Thursday, October 15, as part of the Make Your Voice Heard Loud & Vote Tour. It's a solo-acoustic set, so you'll be hearing the project stripped down to just the voice and the guitar rather than the full band.
If you're not familiar, King Youngblood is a Seattle-based rock band fronted by Cameron Lavi-Jones, with drummer Paul 'Styx' Stoot, cellist Chet Peterson and bassist Samy Garcia. Alternative Press called them 'Seattle's Alt Rock Princes,' and AfroPunk Magazine pointed to their knack for turning a small phrase into a massive hook. They describe their work as reclaiming black-fronted rock, packing it with strong songwriting, an Afropunk attitude and an energetic live show. This particular tour strips that back to the acoustic basics, with Lavi-Jones taking the lead.
The music is only one part of the day. The tour is nonpartisan and devoted to voter registration and civic engagement, with the band driving across the country to encourage young people to make their voices heard—starting with, but not ending at, voting. It's a civic-minded run that brings the music to campus rather than the other way around.
