René Marie returns to the Jazz Room with her band Experiment In Truth, blending jazz, blues, soul and originals in an intimate venue.
René Marie is back at the Stage Door Theater on Friday, November 13, performing with her ensemble Experiment In Truth. It's a Jazz Room presentation, part of the series JazzArts Charlotte runs at the theater, and she's playing two shows that night: one at 6 PM and another at 8:15 PM. If Friday doesn't work, she's back on Saturday, November 14, with a 7 PM and a 9:15 PM set. That's four chances over one weekend to catch her in the same room.
Marie is a vocalist who's spent more than two decades building a career that reaches well beyond singing. She's a lyricist, composer, arranger, playwright, actress, educator, speaker, and social justice activist, and she's picked up a fair amount of recognition along the way—including two GRAMMY nominations for Best Jazz Vocal Album. Her sound is shaped by a Southern upbringing, and it weaves jazz, blues, and soul together with original work that draws on folk, R&B, country, and classical elements, all held together by storytelling and a thought-provoking perspective. Over 11 recordings, she's worked around the theme 'Pain + Wisdom = Beauty™,' and her latest GRAMMY-nominated record, Sound of Red (Motéma), celebrates her life story.
