A night of funk music celebrating the East Coast corridor, featuring the House of Funk collective playing the music of Rick James, Kool & The Gang and P-Funk.
House of Funk brings its Tri-State Funk night to Middle C Jazz on Wednesday, October 7, with a set built around the music of Rick James, Kool & The Gang, and P-Funk. It's a night dedicated to the East Coast funk corridor of New York, New Jersey, and the surrounding Tri-State area—the region the band describes as the cultural engine of the 1970s and 1980s.
That particular sound is what they're chasing: smooth jazz horn arrangements, raw street energy, and psychedelic avant-garde merging into the anthems that reshaped pop music and laid the sample foundation for modern hip-hop. The set celebrates regional visionaries like Rick James, Kool & The Gang, and P-Funk, so you'll recognize the names, but the focus is on that specific Tri-State intersection where those styles collided.
House of Funk started in early 2019, conceived by Charlotte guitarist Stefan Kallander as a monthly night for the city's funk lovers. It draws a regular line-up of some of Charlotte's finest musicians, including Courtney Gibson, Jesse Lamar Williams, Zach Wheeler, Braxton Bateman, Simon George, and Kallander himself, with monthly sit-ins by other local funk artists. That core group is who you'll see on stage, playing through the music of those East Coast heavyweights.
