Art historian Dr. Bonnie Noble gives an in-gallery talk on Caravaggio's enduring influence within the context of the 'Caravaggio | Revolution' exhibition.
Dr. Bonnie Noble gives a gallery talk on Caravaggio's enduring influence at Mint Museum Uptown on Friday, October 9. It's part of Caravaggio | Revolution, the exhibition that's been running since April 26 and closes October 25, so this is one of the last chances to catch it.
The talk is set inside the exhibition itself, on Level 4, so you'll be standing among the paintings while Noble talks through them. The show centers on one original Caravaggio, Boy Bitten by a Lizard, surrounded by more than 40 works by Baroque masters who painted in his style—names like Matthias Stomer, Valentin de Boulogne and Jusepe de Ribera. All of them are on loan from the Roberto Longhi Foundation in Florence.
Caravaggio died at 38, but he left a massive mark on painting. He's known for his radical realism and his use of chiaroscuro—that sharp, dramatic contrast of light and shadow that broke 17th-century conventions and sparked a movement across Europe. The exhibition connects that 400-year-old spark to modern film and photography, with commentary from Martin Scorsese, Isaac Julien, David LaChapelle and Tom Hunter, and music videos like R.E.M.'s "Losing My Religion" and Johnny Cash's "Hurt."

If you're already planning to see the show, the talk is a good way to get a bit more context. Special exhibition admission is an extra $10 on top of the museum's standard entry. The exhibition runs through October 25, so you've got a few weeks left to see it if you can't make the talk on the 9th.
