Pick up a free all-ages scratch art kit to create a bookmark and illustration inspired by Clare Leighton at the Mint Museum Randolph.
The Mint Museum Randolph is giving away free art kits from Wednesday, October 7, through Friday, October 9. This month's project is scratch art, and the kits are for all ages, so it works as a solo project or something to do with kids. Each kit comes with scratch art paper, and the goal is to make a bookmark and an illustration at home.
The project takes its cue from the black-and-white wood engravings of artist and writer Clare Leighton. If you're not familiar with her work, she's known for those high-contrast, detailed prints of nature and rural life, and that's exactly the kind of thing scratch art is built for. You start with a dark surface and scratch away the top layer to reveal the light underneath, which is a great way to play with the same kind of line and contrast Leighton used in her engravings.
These are part of the museum's Free Art Kits, a series of hands-on takeaway projects for curious artists of all ages. They're inspired by the Mint Museum collection and pop up at different times throughout the year with support from the Mint Museum Auxiliary. You pick up the kit and take it home to work on at your own pace, rather than sitting down to a scheduled class.

You'll find the kits in the Lewis Family Gallery, which is a creative space for making art, building and puzzle challenges, and stepping into a Romare Bearden collage playhouse. The kits are free, and you can swing by during museum hours: Wednesday from 11 AM to 9 PM, and Thursday and Friday from 11 AM to 6 PM.
