Contemporary electro-jazz performance by the Toronto duo Four80East at Middle C Jazz, blending electronic production with live instrumentation.
Four80East play Middle C Jazz on Friday, October 9, at 6 PM. The Toronto-based electro-jazz duo, Rob DeBoer and Tony Grace, will be performing as a six-piece ensemble, bringing their studio-born sound to a full live band.
Four80East has been around since their debut, The Album, in 1997, and they've spent the years since building a presence on contemporary jazz radio. They've put out eight studio albums and a double live album, and they've seen several tracks hit the Billboard top ten, including the number one Cinco Cinco Seis in 2019 and the single This Time Around. Their most recent release, 2025's Barn Sessions, Vol. 1, captured live-in-studio versions of their songs recorded with an expanded multi-piece ensemble—the same kind of larger lineup they're bringing to this show.
While they started as a studio project, they describe their live sets as high-energy shows. The music blends electronic production with live instrumentation, and with six people on stage, the sound moves from the laptop and the studio floor to a full band. It's a good chance to hear how their recorded work translates to a live room.
