Comedian and author David Nihill presents his new stand-up show Taking Tangents at the Booth Playhouse.
David Nihill brings his new stand-up show, Taking Tangents, to the Booth Playhouse at Blumenthal Arts Center on Friday, October 16. It's a solo night of comedy from a guy whose life has been a bit of a global tour in its own right: born and raised in Dublin, Ireland, he left home at 22 and has since lived and worked in twelve countries and visited more than eighty.
Nihill is as much a writer as he is a comic. He won the San Francisco Comedy Competition, a prize whose previous finalists include Robin Williams, Ellen DeGeneres and Dana Carvey, and finished as runner-up in the Moth's largest US Grandslam storytelling competition. That storytelling background carries over into his recorded work: he filmed his debut special Documented for Dry Bar Comedy in 2019, followed by Cultural Appreciation in 2022 and the award-winning Shelf Help in 2025. Between the specials, he's a bestselling author, so he's used to building a set around a written page.
His work has popped up across a wide range of platformsโTED.com, Sirius XM, Just For Laughs, Netflix Is a Joke Festival, RTE's Late Late Show, The Irish Independent, Inc, NPR and The Huffington Post. His videos have racked up more than 800 million views and a following of over 2 million people, so while he might be a new name to some of us here in Charlotte, he's been working this for a long time. Taking Tangents is presented by Blumenthal Arts & NS2.
