Concert featuring Colby T. Helms presenting his album 'One for the Losers', with opening act Crystal Fountains.
Colby T. Helms brings his band, The Virginia Creepers, to Petra's on Thursday, October 15, with Crystal Fountains opening. Helms is from Boones Mill, Virginia, and he plays his own version of American mountain musicβa raw sound built from country, bluegrass, and folk. This show is built around his second record, One for the Losers, which widens the frame of his debut to look outward at troubled friends, lovers, moonshiners, immigrants, and working-class Virginians.
Much of the album was recorded in Nashville with producer David 'Ferg' Ferguson, and it draws on the Blue Ridge foothills. The historical narrative of 'Ballad of the Bondurant Boys' leads into a following of waltzes, ballads, and old-school Appalachian rhythms. The record balances full-band electric performances with intimate, stripped-back recordings that put Helms' storytelling front and center.
Opening the night is Crystal Fountains, a North Carolina americana, folk, and bluegrass band. They play traditional bluegrass alongside originals that draw on jazz, blues, country, and rock, with vocal harmonies that bring to mind the Delmore Brothers, the Stanley Brothers, and The Louvin Brothers.
