Ceramic artist Grace Stott discusses her Constellation CLT installation with curator Jen Sudul-Edwards at The Mint Museum Uptown.
Grace Stott will be at The Mint Museum Uptown on Friday, November 6, for an artist talk about her installation Constellation CLT. She'll be in conversation with Jen Sudul-Edwards, PhD, the museum's Chief Curator and Curator of Contemporary Art. The talk is part of The Artifacts of Being Human, the exhibition that opened on September 5 and runs through March 7.
Stott is a ceramic artist from Princeton, New Jersey, who studied at the California Institute of the Arts and finished her degree at Tufts University with a focus on painting. After moving back to Charlotte, she became a founding member of Goodyear Arts, a multidisciplinary artist collective. She's shown at the Mint before, both in the Local/Street pop-up series and at the Potters Market.
Her work in The Artifacts of Being Human pulls from family heritage, motherhood, and the objects of daily life. The stories she works with range from ancestors escaping the Mexican Revolution by train to those accused of witchcraft during the Salem Witch Trials. Her own children appear as cherub-cheeked angels and butterflies, and she's recently started adding stained glass to her hand-built ceramics. She describes her approach as following the Pop Art tradition of Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein: she wants to make work that's interesting on its own, without needing any prerequisites to appreciate it.
