Teenage Fanclub

Teenage Fanclub are playing Y Plas on Thursday 19 November, their only Cardiff date this autumn. It's a headline show, so they're the only name on the bill — just the band and a full set. If you've followed them for a while, you know that's how they usually do it: no support act to warm up the room, just the songs they've built their name on.

They're a Scottish band that's been around since the late eighties, and they've spent the years since then sticking to a very particular kind of guitar pop — the sort of melodic, harmony-heavy stuff that doesn't change much from one record to the next. They've never been about reinvention or sudden shifts in sound, so what you get live is pretty much what you get on the albums: clean guitars, singing in thirds and fourths, and a focus on the melody above everything else. It's a steady, reliable way of doing things, and it's why they've kept the same core sound for decades.

The show is at Y Plas, the nightclub inside the Cardiff Students' Union on the Cathays Campus. It's on Park Place, so it's easy enough to get to from the city centre. The set starts at 7:00 pm, and since they're the only act on the bill, that's when the music actually begins rather than when the doors open. Tickets start from £30.00.
