Live music performance by Ríoghnach Connolly and the band Honeyfeet at The Gate Arts Theatre, Cardiff.
Ríoghnach Connolly & Honeyfeet are back at The Gate Arts Theatre on Saturday 14 November, their first Cardiff date since their last run through the city. They're returning with a new body of work to draw from, so the set will lean on the new material alongside the songs they've been playing out on the road.
It's a hard act to pin down. They describe their sound as a blend of protest soul, twisted folk, deep groove and joyful abandon, and that's a fair summary of what they bring to a stage. The protest soul side comes through in the lyrics, while the twisted folk and deep groove handle the music, and the joyful abandon is what usually takes over when the whole thing kicks in. It's a combination that doesn't sit still, moving between the political and the danceable without really choosing one over the other.
They've spent the last few years building a reputation for live shows that are hard to put into a single box, and they've picked up international recognition along the way. This date follows a string of performances that have kept them on the road, and they're bringing that same energy to Cardiff. With the new material now part of the set, it's a good time to catch them if you've only ever heard the older stuff.
