Investigative documentary film directed by Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, screening at Chapter.
Naza, the investigative documentary by Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, is screening at Chapter from 16 to 28 October. It's an 80-minute film, in Hebrew with English subtitles, and it runs daily throughout the window, so you've got plenty of dates to choose from if you're working around a busy week.
The whole thing is built around a single military acronym: NAZA. It's the term Israeli intelligence uses as a euphemism for the number of civilians expected to be killed in an airstrike. The film takes that one word and works outwards from it, using interviews with 24 Israeli soldiers to look at the systems behind Israel's killing of Palestinian civilians in Gaza. Much of it was shot at night on the rooftops of Tel Aviv, and it's an investigative piece as much as a documentary.
Abraham and Szor are two of the four co-directors of No Other Land, the Oscar-winning documentary from 2024, and they've spoken about making this one out of a sense of obligation to use their positions as Israelis to explore that violence. A lot of what the film reveals was published almost immediately by The Guardian, one of its producers, working with +972 Magazine and Local Call in the months following the October 7th attacks. It won at the Venice Film Festival and has picked up widespread critical praise since.
