American R&B and soul singer Macy Gray performs live at The Gate as part of her The Trouble With The Truth Tour.
Macy Gray plays The Gate on Thursday 5 November, part of her The Trouble With The Truth Tour. It's a single-name bill, so she's the only one on the night.
If you're not familiar, Gray is an American R&B and soul singer, songwriter and actress, born Natalie Renée McIntyre in Canton, Ohio, in 1967. She's best known for that distinctive raspy voice, and people often draw comparisons to Billie Holiday, Janis Joplin, Nina Simone and Tina Turner. She moved to Southern California in the 1980s to study scriptwriting and signed with Atlantic Records in 1994. Her breakthrough came with the 1999 single 'I Try', which reached number five on the Billboard Hot 100 and won the Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, just before her debut album On How Life Is came out later that year.
Since then, she's released ten studio albums, including the number one The Id in 2001, and has collaborated with artists like Ariana Grande, Fatboy Slim and Galactic. There's more to her than the music, too: she's appeared on screen in Spider-Man, Scary Movie 3 and Training Day, and she's run her own music school, the M Gray Academy, since 2005. In 2020, she founded the charity My Good.
