Showcase of short films by Deaf filmmakers with BSL interpretation and Q&A, part of Deaf Gathering Cymru.
Deaf MovieMaker is coming to Chapter on Friday 6 November, as part of Deaf Gathering Cymru. It's a showcase of short films by Deaf filmmakers, so you'll see a handful of different pieces in one sitting rather than a single feature. The whole thing is BSL interpreted, and there's a Q&A afterwards, which is the best part — you get to hear from the filmmakers themselves about how they put their work together.
Chapter is a good fit for this. It's one of Cardiff's main independent cinemas, and they do a lot of curated seasons and festivals alongside the usual new releases, so they're used to hosting these kinds of events. They've got laser projection and 35mm, and they run talks and Q&As as part of their regular programme, so the setup for a night like this is right up their street. It's also the lead organisation for Film Hub Wales, which is one of the eight hubs across the UK set up as part of the British Film Institute's Film Audience Network.
Because it's part of Deaf Gathering Cymru, this is one of several events happening around the city as part of the wider gathering. The short film format means you'll get a range of voices and styles in a single evening, and the BSL interpretation makes it accessible. The Q&A follows the screening, so you can ask questions and hear the filmmakers talk through their work before the night wraps up.
