Conductor Anna Rakitina leads the BBC National Orchestra of Wales in a concert featuring works by Mozart, Stravinsky and Antheil.
Anna Rakitina takes the podium at BBC Hoddinott Hall on Thursday 28 January 2027, leading a programme that runs from Mozart's classical brilliance to the bold energy of twentieth-century modernism. It's part of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales 2026-27 season, and the set is built around theatrical flair and rhythmic drive.
The evening opens with a suite from Elena Langer's Figaro Gets a Divorce, described as a witty, expressive sequel to Mozart's operatic world, full of colour, irony and dramatic sparkle. Mozart follows with the radiant Piano Concerto No. 21 in C major, K. 467, played by pianist Clare Hammond, a Royal Philharmonic Society Young Artist Award winner who has appeared at the BBC Proms, Wigmore Hall and leading international venues.
After the interval, the mood shifts. George Antheil's A Jazz Symphony bursts in with swagger and rhythmic bite — the revised 1955 version — before Stravinsky's Symphony in Three Movements delivers a taut, propulsive and unmistakably modern finale. Between the two, it's a long way from the Mozart of the first half.
