Catrin Finch presents her show Notes to Self, weaving her personal journey through music with accompanying letters that explore themes of vulnerability, expectation and transformation.
Catrin Finch brings her show Notes to Self to the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama on Friday 23 October, with the performance taking place in the Dora Stoutzker Hall on North Road. It's a night that pairs her music with accompanying letters, which she uses to trace the stories of her own personal journey, weaving together her experiences, emotions and introspections.
Through the songs, she works through themes of vulnerability, expectation, transformation and the unpredictability of a life played out under the public eye. The letters act as a second thread, giving a voice to the thoughts and reflections that sit behind the music. It's a personal way of framing a concert, where the songs don't just stand on their own but are tied to the specific moments and people she's writing about.
There's a record to go with it, too. Critic Jon Lusk, writing for BBC Classical Music Magazine, called it 'a real diamond of a disc' and described Finch as 'an articulate writer of huge emotional intelligence'. If you've heard the album, the show is the live version of that same material, with the letters adding a layer of context you won't get from the record alone.
