A concert of ballet music featuring works by Stravinsky and Ravel, performed by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales conducted by Ludovic Morlot, with soloists Benjamin Baker and Timothy Ridout.
The BBC National Orchestra of Wales are at BBC Hoddinott Hall on Thursday 18 March, 7:30pm, with a programme of ballet music from Stravinsky and Ravel. It's part of their BBC NOW 2026-27 season, and the night brings together three composers who each reshaped musical language with a fair bit of imagination and originality.
Stravinsky's Jeu de cartes opens the evening. It's ballet music with wit and rhythmic brilliance, spinning a sly narrative around a deceitful Joker. At the heart of the programme is Benjamin Britten's Double Concerto for Violin and Viola, which he wrote while he was still a student at the Royal College of Music. After the interval, Maurice Ravel's Mother Goose Suite unfolds a world of fairy tales in glowing orchestral colour. The concerto brings in two soloists for the middle section: violinist Benjamin Baker and violist Timothy Ridout. The whole thing is conducted by Ludovic Morlot.
