Screening of the film 'Aberfan: 25 Years of Experience' followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers.
Chapter is screening Aberfan: 25 Years of Experience on Wednesday 21 October, followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers. The film runs 53 minutes, and the whole thing starts at 8.00pm.
It's a Welsh film from 1991, directed by Richard Davies and Chris Rushton. The project started with a proposal from Aberfan resident Maureen Hughes, who wanted to tell the village's largely untold story of healing. Her son, Richard Davies, took the idea to the Community Video Workshop in Cardiff, which set up a production base in Aberfan and worked closely with the residents, giving the community control over how its experiences were told. It originally aired on Channel 4 and S4C.
This screening comes on the 60th anniversary of the Aberfan disaster, which happened on 21 October 1966. On that day, a colliery spoil tip above the village collapsed, engulfing Pantglas Junior School and nearby houses, and claiming the lives of 116 children and 28 adults. The disaster was later attributed to the negligence of the National Coal Board. The screening is presented as a space for reflection, remembrance and commemoration.
