Concert by Australian cellist and songwriter William Jack, blending jazz, folk and classical influences, part of the Rising Stars series at St George's Bristol.
William Jack plays St George's Bristol on Thursday 15 October, a lunchtime concert in the main hall. He's an Australian cellist and songwriter from Adelaide, now based in London, who carved his own path after classical studies in Vienna. He's best known for folding his jazz guitar background into an unconventional style of cello playing, and for a restless desire to break boundaries between genres and cultures.
He's made a name for himself by redefining what the cello can do. He performed the solo compositions of his album This Old Cello Box live on BBC Radio 3, and the set he's bringing here runs from baroque to bluegrass. He pairs Bach's Suite 6 in D major with more unconventional solo cello possibilities, including what he calls 'sideways cellopickin'.
The performance is part of the Rising Stars series of lunchtime concerts at St George's, a showcase of emerging talent that ranges from jazz to folk and beyond. Pre-concert and post-concert lunch are served around the show, and multibuy discounts apply when booking several concerts in the series.
