Animated adventure from LAIKA about a teenage girl's rescue mission into an enchanted forest, shown as part of the CTBA programme.
Wildwood is showing at Watershed on Friday 23 October, an animated adventure from LAIKA, the Oscar-nominated and BAFTA-winning studio. If you've followed their work before, you'll know they do things a bit differently from the big CGI houses, and this one follows a fairly classic setup that quickly goes off the rails.
The story starts with Prue McKeel, a headstrong teenager voiced by Peyton Elizabeth Lee. When her baby brother is snatched by a murder of crows, she doesn't wait around for someone else to sort it — she launches a rescue mission into the Impassable Wilderness, an enchanted forest that sits just beyond Portland, Oregon. She doesn't go alone, either; she's joined by her loyal classmate Curtis Mehlberg, voiced by Jacob Tremblay. From there it's a sweeping adventure about love, sacrifice and the kind of magic that reveals itself when you dare to look beyond the familiar.

It's being shown as part of Watershed's CTBA (Continuing Through The Arts) programme, and the schedule is generous enough that you can fit it in whenever suits you best. There are multiple screenings throughout the day: 11:00, 14:00, 14:10, 14:50, 16:30, 17:30, 17:40 and 17:50. With eight slots to choose from, it's easy to work around your day rather than the other way around.
