30th anniversary screening of the disaster movie Twister at the Planetarium, with a brief star show and pop-up bar available.
Twister is coming to The Planetarium on Saturday 21 November, a 30th anniversary screening of the 1996 disaster movie. It's a fitting spot for it, too: the film is all about chasing storms, and the screening takes place inside the dome at We The Curious, the science and arts centre in Millennium Square that's home to more than 200 interactive exhibits.
For those who need a refresher, Twister was devised and co-produced by Michael Crichton, who also wrote Jurassic Park. It stars Helen Hunt as Jo Thornton, a meteorologist haunted by a tragic family history with tornadoes, who's testing her new 'Dorothy' device to revolutionise tornado research and warning. The film is known for special effects that still hold up, and for being one of the few disaster movies where the protagonists actively seek out the danger, chasing storms across Oklahoma. Hunt is joined by Bill Paxton and Philip Seymour Hoffman in an ensemble cast that carries the whole thing.
The night doesn't start with the film. A brief planetarium star show runs immediately before, so you'll get a bit of the dome's usual astronomy before the storm rolls in. There's also a pop-up bar onsite with drinks and limited snacks, which is handy if you want something to sip on before the lights go down.
