Open mic night with music, comedy and poetry, hosted by rapping violinist Mike Dennis. Free entry.
The Grain Barge Open Mic is back at The Grain Barge in Hotwells this Tuesday 13 October, from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm. It's an open mic night that runs every other Tuesday downstairs, where the draw is an energetic atmosphere and sound quality that holds up. There's a house guitar provided, so you don't need to lug your own in if you're just playing a couple of songs.
Hosting the night is Mike Dennis, a violinist and rapper who also fronts several other open mic nights across Bristol, having previously hosted at The Gallimaufry. He brings a technical mind and a musical ear to the room, keeping things moving while making sure the sound is right. The bill welcomes singer-songwriters, rappers, poets and comedians, and anything that fits into ten minutes or two songs gets a slot. It's a mixed bag of a night, with music, comedy and poetry all sharing the same stage.

The venue itself is a historic converted barge on Bristol's harbour, described as bursting with character and offering stunning panoramic views — billed as 'the best venue on a boat in Bristol'. The open mic takes place downstairs, where the energy builds as the night goes on. If you're performing, there's a free drink in it for you, and entry is free for everyone else. Under-18s must be accompanied by an adult over 21 in a 1:1 ratio. It runs from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm, so there's plenty of time to settle in and hear a few acts before you take your turn.
