The Gary Crosby Quintet celebrate the jazz legacy of Charles Mingus with Mingus Moves, featuring classics from his 1973 album.
The Gary Crosby Quintet bring a night of Charles Mingus to St George's Bristol on Friday 20 November, starting at 7.30pm in the Main Hall. The set is built around Mingus Moves, the album Mingus recorded in 1973 and which some describe as possibly his last great one. That's the core of the evening, but they'll round it out with some of the bigger Mingus classics, Goodbye Pork Pie Hat and II B.S. among them.
Gary Crosby OBE leads the quintet from the double bass, and he's a fellow bassist to Mingus, so he knows the role from the inside. He's also a band leader and co-founder of Tomorrow's Warriors, and he's put this group together to celebrate Mingus as both a jazz innovator and a composer. The rest of the line-up is Mark Kavuma on trumpet, Alex Ho on piano, Miranda Radford on drums, and David Kayode on sax.
Crosby's own words on Mingus are pretty direct: "He was STAUNCH! He never compromised the music or held back on his beliefs." It's a good way to frame the night, because Mingus's legacy is a long one, with recordings like Black Saint and the Sinner Lady, Mingus Ah Um, Blues and Roots, and Mingus Mingus Mingus all part of the story. This concert focuses on Mingus Moves as a starting point, then reaches back to the classics that most people recognise.
