An absurd devised comedy combining clowning, physical theatre and original music, exploring the pressures of sales work.
BRILLIG bring Terry's: An American Tragedy About Cars, Customers, and Selling Cars to Customers to The Wardrobe Theatre on Monday 2 and Tuesday 3 November. It's a devised comedy that pulls from clowning, physical theatre and original music, and it's billed as 'David Lynch meets Wes Anderson'.
The story is set over a Memorial Day weekend at Terry's Cars & Automobiles, where a motley, motor-mouthed sales team has just four days to hit their monthly target of 66 cars or face the wrath of their overlord boss, Terry. From there, the marketing jargon is turned into what The Scotsman called 'a hilarious and horrifying poetry' — a fast-paced, darkly comic look at capitalist culture's pressure to sell, sell, sell. It's a high-energy hour that doesn't stick to one lane: superheroes, pop-rock ballads, the D-Day landings and one very special balloon all make an appearance. Reviewers have called it 'sharply directed and punchily performed' (The Scotsman) and 'a hilarious, impressive, satirical, surrealist hoot!' (The Quintessential Review).
Behind it is BRILLIG, an international, Lecoq-trained emerging company now based in Gloucestershire. Their work is guided by the belief that laughter and silliness can provoke personal and political reflection, which fits the bill here: the absurdity of the sales floor is the starting point for a wider look at the pressure to perform. It's an hour with no interval, so it runs straight through.
