Folk music concert featuring Steve Knightley and The Winter Yards Band, with special guest Megan Henwood, at St George's Bristol.
Steve Knightley & The Winter Yards Band play St George's Bristol on Thursday 5 November, their first Bristol date since their last run of shows. Knightley is the multi-award-winning English singer-songwriter and co-founder of Show of Hands, whose songs 'The Galway Farmer' and 'Cousin Jack' became folk anthems. He's back with the Winter Yards Band, the trio he's been touring with across the UK.
The set mixes songs from the Winter Yards album with new material written on the road — stories of landscape, community and the changing world around us. The band describes their style as 'folk noir', a blend of poetic songwriting and a cinematic acoustic sound. That sound comes from the three of them: David Delarre on guitar, John Parker on double bass and Evan Carson on percussion. Special guest Megan Henwood opens the night with a 35-minute solo set before joining the band for part of the main show.
Knightley has spent a good deal of his career working with the rural and the overlooked. He's often called 'the gravel-voiced spokesman of the rural poor', a description that fits the songs he's known for. Beyond the music, he launched the 'Grow Your Own Gig' tour in 2014, served as artistic director of the 2016 installation Shrouds of the Somme, received an Honorary Doctorate of Music from Plymouth University in 2015 and was named an Honorary Rifleman in 2019.
