Subtitled screening of 'Fatherland', directed by Paweł Pawlikowski, as part of the BFI London Film Festival on Tour 2026.
Watershed is hosting a preview screening of Fatherland on Thursday 15 October at 18:00, as part of the BFI London Film Festival on Tour 2026. The film is directed by Paweł Pawlikowski and is subtitled, with a 12A rating.
It's set in the summer of 1949, at the height of the Cold War. Sandra Hüller plays Erika, who accompanies her father, the Nobel laureate author Thomas Mann, on a literary tour across West and East Germany. When family tragedy strikes, the spiritual healing Mann deems essential for a divided country becomes necessary for their own relationship. It's described as an impeccably shot and evocative drama that meditates on the healing process for a fractured national identity.
The screening is one of 14 previews Watershed is presenting from the 70th BFI London Film Festival line-up, which brings some of the world's best new films to Bristol and the South West. It's the venue's biggest year yet for the festival, with new films from Eleanor Coppola, Martin McDonagh, Boots Riley, Danny Boyle, Lee Chang-dong, and Cristian Mungiu among the programme. Watershed Cinema Programmer Steph Read calls LFF on Tour "a real highlight of the cinema calendar each year."
