Join philosopher Rebecca Buxton as she explores big ideas connected to the week's news stories in a lively, interactive conversation.
Rebecca Buxton is back at St George's Bristol on Saturday 14 November for another session of Philosophical Times, a series of live conversations where she takes the week's news stories and pulls out the big ideas behind them. It's not a lecture in the traditional sense; the sessions are pitched as lively and inspiring, and the audience is invited to take part rather than just watch, so you'll be doing more than just sitting in the dark.
Buxton is a philosopher whose research covers citizenship, migration and exile, as well as the history of women in philosophy. She's also a co-editor of the book The Philosopher Queens, which gives you a sense of the ground she works on. That background in citizenship and migration often sits right at the heart of the news, so when she looks at a headline, she's usually drawing on a lifetime of thinking about how we live together and who gets to belong.
The format is simple: she takes the current news cycle and uses it as a springboard for a wider conversation. It's a way of slowing down the 24-hour news cycle and asking what it actually means for the way we live, and because it's a conversation, the direction it takes can depend on who's in the room and what they bring to the table.
