Special screening of The Fly marking its 40th anniversary, with horror micro-shorts from an open call, presented with Noods Radio and DIY Cinema.
Watershed is screening David Cronenberg's The Fly on Wednesday 28 October, and it's a big one: the film is turning 40. If you've never seen it, it's a masterclass in body horror, and The Guardian called it Cronenberg's best film. Jeff Goldblum plays a brilliant but eccentric scientist who starts turning into a giant man-fly hybrid after one of his experiments goes horribly wrong. It's the kind of thing that stays with you long after the credits roll.
The night is presented in partnership with Noods Radio and in collaboration with local legends DIY Cinema, and it sits within Watershed's Scares at the Shed season, a run of spooky screenings that goes on throughout October. So this isn't just a one-off; it's part of a whole month of horror at the venue.
Before the main feature, there's a selection of horror micro-shorts made by the audience. They came from a '30-Second Horror Shorts Open Call' that invited people to film their own nightmare of 30 seconds or under, with cult classics like The Thing, Videodrome, Re-Animator and The Evil Dead as inspiration. It's a nice way to see what the local community has been up to before the main event kicks off. An introductory talk opens the evening, so you'll get a bit of context before the shorts and the film follow.
