Pianist Máire Carroll performs a curated selection of Philip Glass's piano études, marking the composer's 90th birthday.
Máire Carroll plays a curated selection of Philip Glass's Piano Études at St George's Bristol on Friday 23 October, starting at 7.30pm. The recital marks Glass's 90th birthday, and the programme follows that timeline: Carroll picks études from across the two decades it took him to write them, so the set spans a good chunk of the cycle rather than sticking to one era.
It's a fitting pairing. Carroll is regarded as one of the most accomplished performers of Glass's études in the world, and she's got the record to back it up: her album of the complete étude canon, released in 2024, was named by The Scotsman as one of the top five classical music records of the year and drew praise from BBC Music Magazine and International Piano Magazine. If you've heard the album, this is a chance to hear the material live; if you haven't, it's a good place to start with Glass's piano writing.
