Lunchtime jazz concert by the Christ-Stephane Boizi Sextet, exploring the hard bop tradition and the music of the Black Christian Church.
Christ-Stephane Boizi Sextet play the main hall at St George's Bristol on Friday 13 November, starting at 1.00pm. It's a lunchtime jazz date, part of the venue's regular series of midday concerts in the Grade II listed building.
Boizi is a trombonist, composer and bandleader who's been making his mark on the London jazz scene. He's signed to Mark Kavuma's Banger Factory Records, with his debut LP due later this year. His sound is steeped in the hard bop tradition, carrying the legacy of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, Horace Silver and Jackie McLean, while his compositions draw on his close personal connection to the music of the Black Christian Church. He's also a member of the Nu Civilisation Orchestra, was a featured soloist in Mississippi Goddamn, a Nina Simone celebration at the Royal Festival Hall, and has performed with Brazilian maestro Arthur Verocai at the Barbican.
The show is part of Tomorrow's Warriors' Warriors Rise initiative, a seven-date UK run supporting emerging artists from a label credited with changing the face of UK jazz over 35 years, having nurtured Ezra Collective, Moses Boyd, Nubya Garcia, Shabaka Hutchings, Soweto Kinch and Jason Yarde. It also sits within St George's Bristol's Lunchtime Concert series, held in the venue's Grade II listed building.
