Lady Leshurr performs live at Thekla, celebrating the 10th anniversary of her 'Queen's Speech' series, with support from Nicole Blakk.
Lady Leshurr plays Thekla on Tuesday 20 October, part of her 10 Years of The Queen's Speech tour. It's a night built around the series that put her on the map, and the Bristol date is presented by Gotobeat.
If you're not familiar with the name, Lady Leshurr is the stage name of Malesha O'Garro, a rapper and producer from Birmingham. She started recording in the early 2000s when she was still in her early teens, with mixtapes as her primary format. Over the years she's developed a witty, sometimes high-speed wordplay that draws on UK garage and grime, and she's known for confrontational rhymes set against a buoyant melodicism.
For a while she turned down label offers that asked for too many artistic compromises, and she eventually reached a wider audience on her own in 2015. The fourth episode of her Queen's Speech series was a one-take video that went viral and racked up tens of millions of plays; five tracks from the series were compiled in 2016, the same year she signed to a major label. This tour marks ten years since that series first took off, so the set is built around the material that defined her early career.
