Documentary by Frederick Wiseman following rehearsals and performances of the Paris Opera Ballet, subtitled screening.
La Danse: The Paris Opera Ballet is screening at Watershed on Saturday 19 and Monday 28 December. It's a subtitled documentary by Frederick Wiseman, and it follows the rehearsals and performances of seven ballets by the Paris Opera Ballet. Rather than just the finished shows, it looks at the work that goes into running the company and the coordinated effort between choreographers, ballet masters, dancers and designers.
Wiseman is an American documentary filmmaker whose career spans seven decades, and La Danse is part of Watershed's Wiseman of the Month season. That's a year-long programme tracing his back catalogue from his first film, Titicut Follies (1967), through to his latest release, Menus-Plaisirs - Les Troigros (2023). If you've been following the season, this is one of the titles that fits into that timeline.
