A screening of the 1958 French crime film 'Juste avant la nuit' by Claude Chabrol, part of the 'Claude Chabrol: Elements of Crime' season at Watershed.
Juste avant la nuit screens at Watershed on Sunday 25 October at 14:00. It's part of Claude Chabrol: Elements of Crime, a season running through the venue that brings together a selection of newly restored films, shown with thanks to the BFI.
To get where this fits, you have to go back to the late 1950s and early 60s. Chabrol was one of the original critic-turned-filmmakers of Cahiers du Cinéma, the influential magazine that basically launched the French New Wave. He spearheaded that movement alongside Jean-Luc Godard, François Truffaut, Jacques Rivette and Éric Rohmer. While those names were reshaping the language of cinema in their own image, Chabrol was more interested in reshaping French cinema in that of Alfred Hitchcock. His fascination with the director's coolly detached visual style led to films like Le Boucher and La Femme infidèle, and earned him the nickname the 'French Hitchcock'.

Juste avant la nuit is one of the titles in this season, and because it's a restored print, it's a good chance to see it as it was meant to be. If you've got a soft spot for the French New Wave, or if you're just coming to Chabrol for the first time, this is a solid place to start. The screening is on Sunday 25 October at 14:00 at Watershed.
