Piano recital by James Lisney featuring Romantic works by Liszt, Schubert, Chopin, Rachmaninoff and Kreisler.
James Lisney returns to St George's Bristol on Wednesday 11 November, with a programme of Romantic piano music built around poetry, song and the spirit of the dance. It's a solo recital, so it's just Lisney and the piano in the main hall.
The set opens with Franz Liszt's Bénédiction de Dieu dans la solitude, the third piece from his 1853 cycle Harmonies poétiques et religieuses—a work Liszt himself counted among his most significant. From there, the programme moves through Franz Schubert's Drei Klavierstücke, written in 1827/28 and later edited by Johannes Brahms, and Chopin's Sonata in b minor opus 58. Rachmaninoff makes an appearance too, with his transcriptions Lilacs opus 21/5 and Daisies opus 38/3. The evening closes with two waltzes by Fritz Kreisler, which the composer originally passed off as 'Old Viennese Dances' before eventually admitting they were his own.
Lisney describes the music as showing the piano at its most romantic. A 2013 review in The Telegraph praised his playing as capable of giving the mechanical box of wires and wood a singing soul. The whole thing is suitable for ages 14 and over.
