Exhibition of projects from Magnum Foundation's Photography Expanded Fellowship on the climate crisis, featuring twenty photographers from around the world.
HEAT opens at The Welcome Building on Wednesday 14 October, bringing together work from the Magnum Foundation's 2023-25 Photography Expanded Fellowship. It's an exhibition about the climate crisis, but not in the way you usually see it. The fellowship supported photographers to find new ways of telling stories about the crisis and the inextricable relationship between communities and land, and the result is a collection of projects from eighteen landscapes around the world.
Across those landscapes, the work looks at places where multiple timelines coexist: histories embedded in the land, environmental transformations unfolding in the present, and futures yet to be imagined. Rather than depicting climate change solely through images of catastrophe, the series looks at the longer histories and lived experiences behind environmental disruption, showing how landscapes become archives that hold memories of extraction and displacement alongside knowledge, resilience, and intergenerational connection.
Twenty photographers are involved, with work from Andrea Hernández Briceño (Venezuela), Farhana Satu (Bangladesh), Fatma Fahmy (Egypt), Florence Goupil (Peru), Gayatri Ganju (India), Giya Makondo-Wills (UK / South Africa), Hashem Shakeri (Iran), José Luis Arroyo-Robles (Mexico), Kunga Tashi Lepcha (India), Luis Antonio Rojas (Mexico), Luján Agusti (Argentina), Mahmoud Khattab (Egypt), María Valqui (Peru), Miora Rajaonary (Madagascar), Ofoe Amegavie (Ghana), River Claure (Bolivia), seth cardinal dodginghorse (Tsuut'ina Nation), and Zumrad Mirzalieva (Uzbekistan). It's a broad reach, pulling together voices from across the globe rather than focusing on one region.
