National Theatre Live screening of the Golden Boy, a revival of Clifford Odets' classic, directed by Sam Yates, with Josh O'Connor leading the cast.
Golden Boy comes to Watershed on Thursday 5 November, as part of the National Theatre Live season. It's a revival of Clifford Odets' American classic, filmed live at the Almeida Theatre and brought to the big screen for cinema audiences. Josh O'Connor, known from The Crown and Challengers, leads the cast, and the whole thing is directed by Sam Yates, who also did Vanya.
The play is set in 1930s New York, right in the middle of the Great Depression. It follows Joe Bonaparte, a gifted young violinist who gets lured away from his music and into the brutal world of professional boxing. It's that classic trade-off: the art he loves for the money and fame he's tempted by, and the cost that comes with it. There's a live string quartet involved too, which keeps the music at the front of the story.
Because it's a National Theatre Live screening, you're seeing a recording of the stage production rather than a live performance on the night. It's the same strand that brings recordings from some of Britain's biggest stages to cinema screens, so you get the full theatrical experience without having to travel to London. The production was filmed at the Almeida, and it carries an 18 certificate, so it's one for the adults.
