An evening of uplifting orchestral and choral music featuring Poulenc's Gloria, Haydn's Cello Concerto, and Finzi's Magnificat, performed by the Bristol Ensemble and The Fitzhardinge Consort.
Bristol Ensemble and The Fitzhardinge Consort are playing St George's Bristol on Wednesday 14 October, part of the Just Announced series. It's an evening of orchestral and choral music, with the two groups sharing the bill and Jonathan James conducting. The programme brings together Poulenc's Gloria, Haydn's Cello Concerto in C, Finzi's Magnificat and Fauré's Pavane Op 50.
At the centre is the Gloria, which Poulenc wrote in 1960. It's one of the defining choral works of the twentieth century, known for its rich colour and the way it moves between joyful celebration and quiet reflection. Around it, the evening is rounded out by Haydn's Cello Concerto in C — a work thought to have been lost for almost 200 years before it was rediscovered in Prague in 1961, and now celebrated for its warmth, charm and lyricism. For that piece, Bristol Ensemble's principal cellist, Harriet Wiltshire, takes centre stage as soloist. The rest of the bill adds Finzi's Magnificat and Fauré's Pavane Op 50, and the organisers describe the whole thing as a journey from the graceful clarity of Haydn to the luminous choral worlds of Finzi and Poulenc.
