Bristol Ballroom Community final function of the year, an open-to-all kiki walk and battle with categories like Vogue Femme and Runway.
FRUITEA is back at The Trinity Centre on Tuesday 27 October, the Bristol Ballroom Community's final function of the year. It's an OTA — open to all — kiki, which is a practice ball rather than an official scene ball. That means anyone can walk any category regardless of gender identity or expression, and walkers are judged on a 10-point scale. Categories like Vogue Femme and Runway are on the bill, and the night is open to everyone, not just those who've walked before.
Ballroom itself is a community created by and for queer women of colour, specifically trans women, and it grew out of New York in the 1980s when LGBTQ+ venues turned away queer people of colour. Houses are the chosen families formed by people pushed out of their homes after coming out. The Bristol scene has been shaped by figures like Aysha, called the mother of the city's scene, and Maze Louboutin, who hosted Bristol's first kiki function in 2024 and became UK Princess of the Kiki House of Louboutin. The community is a priority space for queer and trans and gender non-conforming Black and people of colour.
Because it's a kiki, the focus is on the community and the practice of walking rather than the high-stakes competition of a scene ball. It's a place to get on the floor, try out a category, and see how it feels. Since it's the final one of the year, it's the last chance to catch a Bristol Ballroom function before 2027.
