70th anniversary screening of the sci-fi classic Forbidden Planet (1956) as part of the Bristol Film Festival's science-fiction programme.
Forbidden Planet is coming to The Planetarium on Friday 20 November, as part of the Bristol Film Festival's science-fiction programme. It's a 70th anniversary screening of the 1956 classic, and the festival is marking its own 10th anniversary too, with the Planetarium serving as its home for space and sci-fi.
If you've never seen it, Forbidden Planet is one of the grandfathers of the whole genre. It was loosely inspired by Shakespeare's The Tempest and broke new ground for its time, setting a good few benchmark firsts in science fiction cinema. It also features a young Leslie Nielsen, long before he became known as a comic actor. Seeing it in a planetarium feels like the right place for it, tooβa film about a distant planet and the depths of space, watched under a dome.
