Screening of the documentary 'First Born Second' exploring the lives of the children of the Windrush generation, followed by a Q&A with director Michelle Pascal and cast members.
Watershed is screening the documentary First Born Second: Voices of the Children of the Windrush Era on Thursday 29 October, starting at 7pm. The film is followed by a Q&A with director Michelle Pascal, co-producer Roger Griffith MBE, and several of the cast, hosted by Euella Jackson.
Directed by award-winning filmmaker Michelle Pascal and co-produced by writer and curator Roger Griffith MBE, the documentary focuses on the 'Second Generation' — the children of the Windrush pioneers who grew up Black in 1970s and 80s Britain. Seven Bristolians carry the story: Professor Shawn Sobers, Sherrie Eugene-Hart, Latoyah McAllister-Jones, Beverly Douglas, Delroy Hibbert, Vernon Samuels, and Griffith himself. They describe navigating racial flashpoints like street skinheads and discriminatory 'SUS Laws', while breaking barriers on Olympic tracks, in television newsrooms, and inside the police force.
Griffith says the film champions those pioneering parents while showing how their children forged a new Black and British identity, drawing on joy, creativity, and cultural transformation. Broadcaster Sherrie Eugene-Hart recalls the contrast between Caribbean home celebrations and the hardships her parents faced, such as being chased by Teddy Boys and refused jobs. Pascal notes the small, shared details that surface, like the glass fish common to Caribbean homes.
