Screening of the film 'Dao' by Alain Gomis, with a short introduction before the film, as part of the Film Africa x Afrika Eye cycle.
Watershed is screening Dao on Sunday 18 October at 17:30, as part of the Film Africa x Afrika Eye series. It's the latest from French-Senegalese filmmaker Alain Gomis, who previously made Félicité, and it's being described as his most sprawling and ambitious film so far. There's a short introduction before the film starts, so you'll get a bit of context before the lights go down.
Dao follows two interconnected ceremonies: a memorial in Guinea-Bissau and a wedding in Paris. Both are attended by Gloria, a taciturn, soulful middle-aged woman whose father has recently died and whose daughter, Nour, is about to be married. The film is cast with a mix of professional actors and amateur performers, including members of Gomis's own family, and it unfolds as a tapestry that raises questions of ancestry, assimilation, life and death, and the power and persistence of African diaspora traditions.
